Mercury Class Yacht Racing Association

The day had high clouds and winds from the North to West and the velocity was variable 6-10 knots. The courses were all sausages finishing on the wind. The competition was pretty good as five of the nine entrants were past class champions.

Race one was once around with Chris Rabb and Kenny Dair leading the way. A north wind came in at the start and was a big disadvantage to those starting at the pin. Rabb won easily followed by Mike and Kyle Burch. Doug Baird and Chris Messano placed third.

The second race more of Rabb. As we know he can be untouchable and he was, on the twice around course. Baird started to show the speed he has had all year. Burch was third. The breeze seem to be strongest on the breakwater side of the course.

Race three was a twice around, with some light spots especially on the runs. Nothing was going to stop Rabb as he won the third race. Randy Smith and Park Densmore were making their move and placed second following some good downwind work.Pax Davis and Chris Davis had their best race, placing third.

Race four was more of the same breeze, but Baird got out in front and knew what to do with it. Mac Kilpatrick and Alex Curtiss showed some good speed upwind and placed second. Third place went to Rabb, who had to come back on the second lap.

Sunday was a beautiful day. There was a steady breeze at about 8-10 knots  with a few suttle shifts.  The course was the same sausage, but with a different number of laps for each race. Race 5 was once around with Kilpatrick leading the entire race. Tom Priest and Damon Guizot had their best race placing second. Rabb stayed in the hunt with a third.

Race 6 was twice around and Baird was back on top even though he had to restart. Burch was second as he had to hold off Rabb who placed third.

Race 7 was three laps and like all the previous races the fleet was tight all the way around the course. Burch was able to stay in front to win the race. Like all the races on Sunday there was a lot of action towards the middle of the course. Rabb placed second followed by  Kilpatrick.

Congratulations to Chris Rabb and Kenny Dair for winning the regatta. Many thanks to Greg Clark for organizing the event and setting the marks. The turkey dinner and the hospitality of the Cabrillo Beach was excellent.
