Mercury Class Yacht Racing Association

The November installment of the Perry Cup series saw the eleven entrants arriving at the starting area on time in a light northwest breeze that promptly died for over an hour. Monterey Bay was smooth and sunny, so everyone had a pleasant time drifting, chatting and having lunch. Then the breeze filled in and PRO Dick Clark,

ably assisted by Chip Wood and Art Sutton, called for a twice-around, windward-leeward course with a downwind finish. Dave West and Bill Pearson won the pin and, finding more pressure on the left, went on to take Race 1. The wind increased a bit, so Dick called for the same course after mark-setters Jack and Patti McAleer stretched the weather leg. West and Pearson started at the pin again, while #504, with Ryan McMillen and former class champion Michael Polkabla aboard, took the opposite end of the line. #504 won the race, and West and Pearson were third; Randy Smith, winner of the last two editions of the Perry Cup, was second, with John Verdoia as crew. Smith went on to win the third race-- three times around-- with a big lead at the finish. With smooth water all day and light to moderate wind, racing was tight throughout the fleet. At the end of the day ten points separated the first six boats in the standings.
