Mercury Class Yacht Racing Association

The overcast was present and as a result the wind, there was always some, blew in the 4-5 knot range. The direction was from the south and did not change much. The sea was limpy and kind of smoothed out as the day went on.

Race one was a twice around sausage, as were all the races , finishing downwind.  Most mercs went on the port tack after the start. This was the tough tack as it was right into the chop.Doug Baird and Tarasa Davis led at the first mark and were never headed. He had the speed. Dave Morris and Jared January , Morris’ first big race in his newly acquired Merc, had a very good second lap to place second. Hal and Anne McCormack also came back on the second lap to place third.
Race two had Jim and Kathy Bradley get the start and lead the fleet on the port tack, as they did in race one. They might have tacked a little early for the mark . Baird  passed Bradley and went on to win. Morris also got into the act and placed second. Bradley was third.  The fast boats were sailing the port tack into the waves very well.
Race three had everyone wanting the committee boat the end of the line, but over half the fleet were force out at the starting line. They all wanted that port tack to the shore. Mark and Liz Chandler chose to take, along with several Mercs,  a long starboard tack. This paid off big as Chandler led the entire race and won. Baird gave chase but had to settle for second place. Meanwhile  McCormack sailed another excellent second lap to  place third.
Day two, Very similar, but the wind might have hit six knots, the direction was more westerly. The lump was still there, but more like a swell.
Race four was all  over at the start, Bradley tacked to the kelp and was never really headed on the twice around course, the same as yesterday. Morris was showing his skill with his Merc and placed second. Baird was third.
Race five was the same, Bradley to the shore at the start. Nobody got near him and he won another race. Chandler did an excellent job of sailing in the kelp to place second. Baird was third again , but won the regatta.
Congratulations to Baird who won the regatta. The silver fleet was won by Drake Baldwin with dad Peter as crew.
Thanks to Dick Clark, Judy Clark, Chip and Joan Woods, John Laughton and utility man Charlie Kurtman
