95th SCYA Midwinter Report
Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club - February 15-16

The 95th Midwinter Regatta had full cooperation from the weatherman. Storms moved through LA in time to deliver 2 almost perfect days of sailing in February. Both days saw light wind in the morning with 6mph by 1pm to start and 8-10mph by late afternoon, and beside that it was sunny. Racing was as usual close and with crowded mark rounding’s all day long, with some penalty turns from time to time.

Race 1 was secured by Raab /Dair, followed by Burch with brother JJ, Dave West, and George Hershman / Rick Brent.

Race 2 was won by Burch, followed by West/Krueger, Randy Smith and daughter Catherine, and Raab/Dair.

Race 3 mixed it up a little and was won by West, followed by Hershman, Whelan, and Raab. Whelan only snuck into third after some tight mark roundings and a few penalty turns at the last windward mark.

Day 1 standings saw West with 6pts, Burch and Raab tied with 9 pts, and Hershman with 12 pts

Day 2 had 3 more races with almost identical conditions and close racing.

Race 4 Burch won, followed by Smith, Raab, and Lanzafame.

Race 5 Raab got ahead and won race 5, followed by Burch, Hershman, and Smith.

Race 6 Burch got to the right and went on to win race 6, followed by Hershman, Raab, and Lanzafame.

Lanzafame had two strong races on Sunday, as did Hershman to finish 3rd

Though the report highlights the front of the fleet, notice that 4 boats tied for 6th place, showing the racing was very close in the group following the top boats.
