Mercury Sailors from the North, East and the South traveled in very rainy weather to race in the Perry Cup Series Finale.
What weather did they find to race in? Sunny, kind of warm, not cold, with a shifty 4-8 knot winds from the south with flat water. With these conditions our top guy, Dick Clark, was able to conduct 5 races.
The first race was a double sausage finishing downwind. Jim and Kathy Bradley were on a mission to catch Doug Baird and Kate Conway in the series. Bradley was off toa strong start and was able to win the race, with Baird second. Mark and Liz Chandler were sailing very fast to place third.
Race two was the same course. As the day went on the long starboard tack seem to be the best, but when the shift came you had to take it. Mac Kilpatrick and Jim Taylor got in the groove and won convincingly. Using the shifts along with his speed Chandler was second. Bradley was third.
Race three had Bradley getting a good start. He was at the committee boat for each start and he led all the way to win. Chandler did another excellent job to place second. Baird was back with a third.
Race four was Kilpatrick's as he led most of the way to place first in the single sausage course. Baird was second followed by Dave Morris and Jared January in the third spot. This was a quick race and there was no room for error.
Race five was a sausage and a half, finishing at the weather mark. Morris took off at the start and was never threatened. Bradley was second followed by MCYRA President Park Jr. and his son Justin who placed third. The final results had Bradley closing in on Baird, but not enough.
Congratulations to Baird for the Series win. Many thanks to Dick Clark for organizing the Series and then conducting it. His helpers were his wife Judy, Chip and Joan Wood. Patti and Jim Womble and there power boat TOOT. The class would like to thank the Monterey Peninsula YC for hosting the 45 year old series and the National regatta they will conduct later this year.
