2015-16 Perry Cup Finale

What a break in the weather. The sunny sky was warming, breeze was 5-8 and the sea was relatively smooth. Eight Mercs started and sailed a double sausage finishing downwind in each of the four races. The wind gradually shifted from the North to the West during the day.

Race one had those going on the port tack off the line picking up a nice shift that put them ahead. Doug Baird and Tim Cordrey led the way on both laps. Randy Smith and Debbie Newton placed second, staying ahead of Jack and Patti McAleer, who placed third.

In race two Smith was hot and stayed on starboard off the line and picked up the changing wind direction. Those that followed him did well. Dave West and Chris Krueger were second followed by Baird.

Race three Pax Davis and Dave Morris followed the McAleers around the first lap. Rather than going left they stayed in the middle and picked up some wind. Davis won a tight one over McAleer. Baird was third.

Race four Mark and Liz Chandler  were paying attention to a fleet of FJs that had their own North-West wind. While the rest of the fleet went off the starting line on the starboard tack. Chandlers went on the port tack picking up their own North-West  wind. The race was over and they won by a lot. West sailed the same course to get a second place with McAleer third.

Baird won the day and the Perry Cup Series. Once again many thanks to Dick Clark for organizing the Series and then conducting it. We thank the Wombles with their power boat TOOT as the committee boat. Chip and Joan Wood were helpers the entire series.

Perry Cup Third Race Day

Eight Mercs showed up to race on a cool but sunny day with very little wind. The flee milled around the committee boat for a little over two hours before one abandoned start.

The wind about 5 knts changed direction. The course was changed and race one was started.Twice around sausage finishing downwind. Doug Baird with Kate Conway skippering and Steve Jeppesen with Ken Maring chose to go right from the start. It paid off big time as they sailed into a nice lift after they tacked to starboard. Conway had a very big lead and kept it to the finish. Jeppesen could not hold his lead over Pax Davis with Dave Morris. Davis passed Jeppesen on the second weather leg to place second with Jeppesen placing third.
The fleet milled around to wait for the start of the second race. It never happened. The wind faded to zero and then came up out of the south. The fleet had dispersed by then. 

Many thanks to the Wombles for the use of their power boat Toot. Helping Dick Clark conduct the racing were Joan and Chip Wood.We have raced five of nine scheduled races. In the next two days, January and February, will have a lot of racing to complete the series. Come on out and use your Merc.
