Mercury Class Yacht Racing Association

After two years of an empty Lake, 27 Mercurys with family and friends descended upon the camping grounds, the cabins and the condos to race two regattas over a period of four days, two races a day. The lake was full, the wind was very shifty and the bouys were all in place.

Race one was a double sausage finishing on the wind. Those that started on the committee end of the line, picked up a more northerly shift, and became the lead fleet. Mike and Kyle Burch were part of that group and took the lead, holding off  Doug Baird and Mike Wentzel. Burch won with Baird taking second. Don Whelan and Kieth Henry sailed a very nice race to place third. Jim and Kathy Bradley  placed fourth. Dave West and Chris Krueger started at the pin end of line, sailed very fast, were able to be with the lead group, but did not hold and placed fifth.

Race two was the same course, but with different  bouys to round. At this start the north side was favored again. Burch was leading again, but Pat and Brendan Bradley sailed very well and were able to get past Burch to win. Whelan was very steady and was able to get another third. Baird had to hold off Jim Bradley to place fourth. Jim was making a very good comeback as he was called over early and had to restart. Jim finished in fifth place.

Race three, day 2, was on a beautiful morning, with a moderate steady breeze, with not to much north in it. Therefore those that started at the outside of the line and went directly to the south shore were favored when the fleet crossed tacks. Jack McAleer with Eric Stassevitch,  were about seventh place around the first weather mark, on the double sausage course, when they went to the south shore on the run they took over first place. They had to work to hold it, but they did and finished first. John Hansen and Tony Basso sailed their best race of the series to become a spoiler for those that had a chance to win as Burch was back in the fleet. Hansen finish second. West was having his best race of the regatta to place third. Pat Bradley was also trying to make up points as he finished fourth. Mac Kilpatrick and Jim Taylor had their best race to place fifth. Burch worked his way to seventh place to protect his lead and won the Bill Bradley Perpetual Trophy.  Many thanks to Pat Bradley for organizing the regatta and to Matt Jones for his race committee work.
