Mercury Class Yacht Racing Association

This regatta was scheduled to follow the annual Huntington Lake Regatta that has three races on two days. There are only two races each day. The third race is on day two. The first race of the Nationals was the afternoon race on day two. This would be followed by two race days to complete the five race no throw out series.

This was another beautiful day, with the breeze coming from the north side, but unlike earlier in the week end this did not really favor any side coming off the start. The course was the double sausage finishing on the wind. Pat and Brendan Bradley were off fast and played the south shore. Doug Baird and Mike Wentzel came from the north side, but could not quite catch Bradley. They split on the downwind legs, but Pat was able to hold on to win. Baird placed second. Bill and Katie Worden were kind of in between Bradley and Baird, but could not get by them. The result was avery nice third place to open the regatta. Mike and Kyle Burch placed fourth, staying in the front group. Jack McAleer and Eric Stassevitch did a fine job, coming from eight place to finish fifth. The tacked out after rounding the leeward mark, rather than tacking to the north shore and picked up three places. Pat Bradley won the Ray Johnson Perpetual Trophy for winning the first race of the Nationals.

Race two was the same type of course in a nice breeze that had holes in it as you approach the windward mark. This tended to create a little confusion, but everyone cleared it safely. Doug Baird with grandson Levi Wentzel made it around the weather mark and was on his way to a big win. Mac Kilpatrick and Jim Taylor gave chase, but they settled for a strong second place. Dave West and Chris Krueger had to hold off McAleer as he charged to the finish. West was third and McAleer was fourth. Burch got into the mix and came fifth. Baird won the Park and Lynn Densmore Perpetual Trophy for winning the second race of the nationals.

Race three was a little lighter wind with some big shifts and a few holes. There was a wind shear down the middle of the course. Either side of the course would work, but the middle was torture. The lead group were on the north shore and they were separated from the rest of the fleet. Baird had to work this race to win it. He did just that on the final downwind leg to set up his second win of the day. He has a seven point lead going into the final two races. Pat Bradley was giving all he could to Baird, but had to settle for second place. Kilpatrick kept up his good performance to place third and tie Bradley for second in the series. McAleer came fron the second group on the last lap to place fourth. Chris and Jeffrey Lanzafame had a great start and led for a while, but had to settle for fifth place. Baird won the Jenkins Perpetual Trophy for winning the third race.

Race four was in a nice breeze that had both ends of the line fairly even as to the shifts that prevailed. John Hansen and Tony Basso had a great start as did Kilpatrick. The two had a real battle all the way around the course with Hansen taking first place. Kilpatrick was second. Jim and Kathy Bradley worked their way through the fleet to place third. Tom Priest and Damon Guizot sailing their best nationals worked hard to place fourth. Baird was over early, but managed to get a fifth place. He still leads the regatta, but Kilpatrick cut the lead to 4 points. John Hansen won the Holden Sanford  Perpetual Trophy for winning the fourth of the nationals.

Race five was a steady breeze more from the north. The whole fleet enjoyed the first starboard tack off the starting line. Then the shifts, the velocity changes and most mercs in the same place. The race and the series was over at the start as Baird got off fast at the north end of the line and was never caught. Burch did a nice bit of sailing as he worked through the fleet to place second. Steve Jeppesen and Ken Maring had their best race with some excellent sailing to place third. Kilpatrick worked hard to catch Baird, but settled for a fourth place and a strong second in the regatta. Lanzafame is doing fine, placing fifth for the second time in the series.

Baird wins the John Koenig trophy for winning the last race of the nationals.
Congratulations to Doug Baird for winning another  nationals with an uncontested score. Tom Priest won the Silver Fleet. Jim and Kathy Bradley won the Jack and Jill Trophy.
Many thanks to Pat Bradley for organizing both regattas. He had some help from brother Jim. Kudos to Matt Jones race committee work. Only one general recall with no help on the leeward end. Anne McCormack did a fine job doing all the scoring. The Lakeshore Inn supported the class with the use of the their large room for sail measuring and two dinners.
