2011 Joe Logan Regatta, San Francisco

The first day was a little cloudy, but warm for SF. The 6 Mercs started early, 11 AM, in the beginning of a weak flood tide with a 8-10 knot breeze. The course for all the races was a double sausage with downwind finishes. The leeward mark was a gate.

The first race had all Mercs going to the shore for the tide relief. Randy Smith with John Hayes took off like a shot and was never headed. Dave West with Chris Kreuger placed a strong second. John Hansen with Tony Basso made a nice recovery from a premature start to get third.

Race two had John and Steffan dropping out, but the fleet was joined by Steve and Michael Kraft. West got off very fast and was never headed. He was followed by Hansen. Pax Davis with Aaron Lee had a struggle, but came in third. The fleet had to wait close to thirty minutes between starts. This kind of negated the reasons for the early start. The result was the ebb becoming stronger and likewise the wind 15-18 knots creating a confused sea.

Race three was the most competitive with good battle between Smith, West and Hansen. At the end of the first sausage, Smith took the outboard gate and made up a good distance on the other two and went on to win the race. Meanwhile Hansen got West. Going into the races on Sunday Smith and West were tied for first.

Race four started on time as the flood tide was beginning. The breeze was very light for the double sausage course. West and Davis were able to get the very slow start. Davis led up to the breakwater and decided to tack to the shore. West continued until he found more breeze which gave him the lead. Because the race was time consuming and the fleet was spread out, the race was shortened at lap. West won with Davis second and Smith third.

Race five had Kenny Dair skippering Tom Priest’s Merc with Tom as crew. Dair got off very fast with Davis on his tail. As they rounded the first gate in the double sausage course and tacked to the shore, West rounded the gate, picked up a huge lift and went on to win the race. Dair was second with Hansen third.

In race six West and Davis started alone at the committee boat and battled around the triple sausage course. The breeze might have hit ten knots with a slight ebb tide developing. They were able to increase their lead over the rest of the fleet and finished very close to being overlapped. West won the race and completed his perfect day that also gave him the regatta. Davis was second in the race and third in the regatta followed by Smith in third place with a second overall.

Many thanks to the PRO Beau Vrolyk and his entire crew for a good regatta. The club provided free drinks and food both Saturday evening and Sunday at the trophy presentation.

Totally Dinghy Regatta, Richmond YC.

Thanks to RYC member Larry Nelson, the Mercury fleet was invited to the Richmond Yacht Club’s Totally Dinghy Regatta on September 17-18.  Six Mercurys registered and five showed up to race on the windward-leeward course set far enough south of Southampton Shoal to get fairly consistent wind direction both days.

The three races on Saturday were single sausages.  The wind started in the 12-13 knot range and built during the day. In the first race Bill Worden, with Beeper Moore, got away cleanly at the start and led all the way around.  Randy Smith and John Hayes were second and Hal and Anne McCormack were third.  All had a repeat performance in the second race, although there was some more tacking on the weather legs.  By the start of the third race the wind had increased to 18-20 knots and the McCormacks decided to sail home.  Smith beat Worden in that race, but unfortunately Larry Nelson lost his rig and had to drop out of that race and the rest of the regatta.

Paul Mueller, with Larry Westland, had tuning issues and couldn’t make it on Saturday, but he was out in his new Merc on Sunday.   The first race that day was a double sausage and saw several position changes during the race.  Smith won, followed by Worden and McCormack, with Mueller very close behind.  (It will be hard to wipe the smile off of Paul Mueller’s face.  He is very happy with his new boat, which looks great and was very competitive on the race course.) The final race, a single sausage, saw the McCormacks win, with Smith holding off Worden for the series.

2011 Labor Day Regatta At Stillwater Cove

Call it fog or overcast, nine Mercs started the 62nd edition of this event. Race one was a triple sausage finishing downwind. The breeze was a nice six knots with few holes, minor shifts and a smooth sea. Hal and Anne McCormack took off on a port tack start and were never headed. Pax Davis with David Morris had a tight race with Randy Smith and John Hayes. By the third lap Davis held on for a second. Smith had other worries with Mark and Liz Chandler challenging. Smith placed third by a half a boat length with Chandler fourth.

Race two had a little more wind velocity and a slight chop with a triple sausage course. Smith and Chandler got off the starting line very fast. McCormack, Davis along with Ben and Jim Bradley duked it out in the first two laps, but Davis was able to place third.  Smith was first with Chandler second.

Race three saw Smith take off again never be headed and taking first place. The breeze picked up to 10 knots and the short chop was getting a little mean on the triple sausage course. Steve and Michael Kraft were hot and until the last lap were able to hold off Davis. At the end of the second lap Davis got by for a second place with Kraft in third.

Day two and race four brought the same foggy weather, but a nice breeze of 6-8 kn. The course was a double sausage twice around finishing downwind. The wind was from the west and the weather mark was set around the corner above the kelp. The fleet headed to the kelp after the start. Davis was there first and finished in first place. Smith did a great job of getting through the fleet on the first downwind leg holding on for second place. Bradley also had a strong second downwind leg to place third.

Race five had Smith up by 1 point on Davis. The course was a triple sausage. The course was reset due to more south in the light breeze. The fleet headed for the kelp, but Chandler tacked away to the south and did an horizon job on the fleet. As the wind petered out, the race was shortened and Chandler won easily after completing the one downwind leg. Davis led the rest to get second. Bradley was third. Davis won the regatta with Smith second and Chandler third. Ben Bradley won the Silver fleet.

Many thanks to Dick Clark for organizing and conducting the regatta. His helpers included Jim and Patti Womble aboard their committee boat “TOOT”, Chip and Joan Wood, Judy Clark and the “cook” and overall helper Charlie Kurtman.

2011 Mercury National Championships

Sponsored by The Monterey Peninsula YC

Monterey in August can be cool with a high fog or overcast compared to the warmer parts of the country. This climate tends to keep the breeze down and the sun hidden. Nineteen Mercs entered the regatta including Merc No. 1. It's owner, Chris Bunn, enters the Merc when the big show comes to Monterey.

Race one was a double, twice around, sausage finishing on the wind with a gate at the leeward mark. Due to the light winds and the length of the course the course was shortened after the first lap. Pat and Brendan Bradley got off to a great start, covered all, taking the shifts up the windward leg. They won the race easily. Second were John Hansen and Tony Basso, holding off third place Mac Kilpatrick and Jim Taylor. Mark and Liz Chandler, in their first race in their newly purchased Merc, placed fourth ahead of Bill and Katy Worden.

The breeze was 6-8 knots most of the day with a shear down the middle of the course. Sailing farther out on the bay or closer into shore resulted in two different wind directions. Race two saw that exact type of condition. Kilpatrick chose to stay off shore and won the race unchallenged. The rest of the top group chose the shore and had quite a race on the double sausage twice around with a downwind finish. The leeward mark was the starting pin. Jack McAleer and Eddie Schaup led this group finishing second. Pax Davis and Aaron Lee fended off the tight group for third.Very close in fourth place was Brad Bergeron and Jim Kennard. Half a boat length behind Bergeron was Chris Messano and Doug Baird.

Race three was more of the same conditions and the Mercs sailing in shore were big winners. The course was a twice around finishing on the wind with a gate to leeward. The course was shortened at the weather mark after the second weather leg with the first four Mercs finished within a minute. McAleer took the lead on the run followed by close challenge by Randy and Kathryn Smith on the final beat. While  Chandler and Davis werw closing up the shore Smith tacked away from McAleer to cover Chandler. However a big shift came in and lifted McAleer to the finish. Barely beating Smith who had Chandler overlapped under him, McAleer was first, Smith second, Chandler third and Davis fourth. Worden, who had been in the hunt until halfway up the last leg, finished fifth.

Going into day two, McAleer was leading with Chandler leading the Silver group and the Jack and Jill Trophy.

Day two was different. The sun peaked out, breeze was stable with no chop. Race four was a twice around sausage with a leeward gate and upwind finish.  WIth a nice 6-8 knot breeze at the start, Bradley got off fast along with Smith and Hansen. The leg downwind presented some holes in the breeze and this changed the order of the fleet. The next leg pretty much defined the finish. Smith won, followed by Hansen, Bradley, Bergeron and Chandler.

For race five the breeze was 10-12 knots from the same direction. Messano took off at the start and was never headed on thethree lap sausage course. In pursuit every inch of the way was Bradley. Kilpatrick had his work cut out as he held off Hansen and Worden. Messano won, Bradley was second, Kilpatrick third, Hansen fourth and Worden fifth.

Pat Bradley wins his seventh National Championship, his first in 1966. The Chandlers in their first Merc Nationals placed fifth, won the Silver Fleet and won the Jack and Jill Trophy.

MCYRA Vice President Eric Conn presided over the awards ceremony. He opened by commenting that this was a family class. This year nine of the nineteen Merc's skippers and crew were family including: father-daughter, father-son, father in law-daughter in law, husband and wife and brothers. He thanked MCYRA President Hal McCormack and wife Anne for planning the event.

The Race Committee got a nice hand. Those mentioned were PRO Jerry Stratton, Garth Hobson, Brad Naegle, Art Sutton, Dave Broch, Donna Womble, Dave Blaskovich, Andrew Arolla, Randy Frye and Eric Andersen. Kit Ruck and Joe Hedley handle the scoring. Thanks to Patti and Jim Womble with their power boat TOOT patroling the course and helping Barbara Worden take pictures. The Monterey YC was an excellent regatta host with Dick Clark setting up the event.

This was a CLEAN REGATTA, organized by Liz Chandler, to clean up and preserve the Oceans. Liz also sold water bottles and regatta shirts. She deserved the trophies she and Mark won.

 2011 Huntington Lake Regatta

Twenty Mercs started the regatta on a beautiful sunny day that saw winds 10-14 knots on relatively smooth lake. The first race was a sausage with four different bouys, three legs to weather. The two downwind legs favored one side of the lake. The starting line was quite long, but many wanted the weather end. Dave West and Chris Krueger took off like they were shot out of a cannon. They led the entire race, but towards the finish they had to hold off Doug Baird and Chris Messano who placed second. Pat and Brendan Bradley had a little more struggle with John Hansen and Tony Basso. Bradley placed third and Hansen fourth. Chris and Jeffrey Lanzafame had a comfortable fifth place.

For race two the wind dropped in velocity as the race progressed. The course was the same configuration but to the other side of the lake. Baird worked out to a good lead by the first weather mark and was never headed. Greg and Andy Goodman, sailing there best Merc race, held second place half way through the race. They were passed by Bradley, who finished second and West third. Don Whelan and Kieth Henry worked very hard to get a fifth place. The rest of the fleet was pretty tight as a group.

Going into race three, Baird is first with 3 points, West with 4 and Bradley with 5. Nice and tight.

Race three was more excellent weather. The start of the race saw a lighter breeze, 6-12 knots with some big shifts. The inboard starting mark was the crowded end. Like the first two races, Pat Bradley took off with a big lead and was never headed on the long course. He was chased by Baird who placed second and by doing so won the Bradley Trophy. West finished third with a strong finish. Hal and Anne McCormack had their best race to get fourth place passing Hansen at the finish. Hansen placed fifth in the race and the regatta. The race lasted nearly two hours and the fleet was very close, with many finishes a few seconds apart.

Congratulations to Doug Baird for winning the regatta and to Greg Goodman for winning the silver group.

Many thanks to Matt Jones for conducting the regatta. The dinner Saturday night was moved outdoors due to construction problems in the big hall. That did not stop Steve Sherry from setting a great party up outside with the band and bar. This was a very successful event because of the Fresno Fleet, headed by Pat Bradley, with helpers Peter Baldwin, Walter Smith and John Woods.

2011 Hart Nunes

Race conditions were 14-16 knot breeze under high fog or low overcast.  With puffs to 20, six Mercs slugged it out in an ebb tide with chop. The first four race courses were double sausages with finishes downwind. Race five was a single sausage. Because of the ebb there was very little tacking and that was done to get clear air. With the weather mark under the point of Belvedere and the start in front of the Corinthian YC contestants had a short race course.

Race one had Chris and Jeffrey Lazafame off fast with a nice lead. However Randy Smith with John Hayes chased them down to grab the first place. Lanzo was second followed closely by Larry Nelson with Michael Quinn in third place. In race two John Hansen with Tony Basso, who started the first race two minutes late, had plenty to make up and they did that by holding off Smith to get first place. Smith finished second. Nelson again placed third.

For race three Hal and Anne McCormack started great but Hansen caught then at the weather mark. McCormack fouled Hansen and in doing his penalty took on a little water and having been through that exercise, retired. Lanzo liked the racing and finished second, holding off Smith.

Race four everybody was getting their licks in. Smith won, Nelson with his best race, placed second. Lanzo was third.

Race five was a single lap race with Lanzo leading the way. But with the changing tide and dying wind holes started appearing on the course. Lanzo found one allowing Hansen to win, Smith second and Lanzo third. Congratulations to Randy Smith for winning the Hart Nunes Trophy!

Many thanks to Steve Mason and his crew for conducting the races and Hal and Anne McCormack for making it happen!

2011 Memorial Day Race At Alamitos Bay

Once again the weather forecast was for a big breeze. But as luck would have it, the beginning breeze was about 8-10 and did build slowly to 12-15 as the day progressed. The courses were all sausages finishing on the wind. The talk for this regatta got started late, but there were still six Mercs that made it.

Race one, a one lap sausage, saw Mike and Kyle Burch take off at the start and would never be headed. Eric Conn and Don Shirley were back in the pack after the first weather mark. Stayed with the group on the run, picked the right hand gate and got a solid second.

Brad and Kevin Bergeron place third, holding off the rest of the group.

Burch got away again, in race 2, on the single sausage course and was never caught and won easily. Conn was still going to pull his magic and held a solid second around the course. Tom Priest and Damon Guizot  sailed their best race and placed third.

The breeze was getting to the high side of the range, but certainly not bad. There was a little chop building and with the wakes of other boats was not too bad. the course was a double sausage. Conn chased Burch around the course, but to no avail. Burch won and Conn was second. Bergeron placed third.

Burch and Conn have a very good scores after the first day. Let's see what tomorrow brings.

Sunday morning winds followed a little early rain, but it was honking. Davis pulled out, but Eric Conn convinced the race committee to let the Mercs race in the harbor. Priest had dismissed his crew and Brad Bergeron had a bad back, so Bergeron crewed for Priest.

Race 4 saw Conn get off fast and lead the group to the finish. The rest of the fleet were over early and were all DNC.

Burch got back on track in race five and won again in the shifty conditions. The difference racing in the harbor was a little less wind and shifty, but smooth water. Jim Barton and Kent Massing had their best race and placed second.

Burch won race six and Conn was back in his second spot. There was one throw out. Congratulations to the Burch Family for the win.
