2015-16 Perry Cup Third Race Day
Eight Mercs showed up to race on a cool but sunny day with very little wind. The flee milled around the committee boat for a little over two hours before one abandoned start.
The wind about 5 knts changed direction. The course was changed and race one was started.Twice around sausage finishing downwind. Doug Baird with Kate Conway skippering and Steve Jeppesen with Ken Maring chose to go right from the start. It paid off big time as they sailed into a nice lift after they tacked to starboard. Conway had a very big lead and kept it to the finish. Jeppesen could not hold his lead over Pax Davis with Dave Morris. Davis passed Jeppesen on the second weather leg to place second with Jeppesen placing third.
The fleet milled around to wait for the start of the second race. It never happened. The wind faded to zero and then came up out of the south. The fleet had dispersed by then
Many thanks to the Wombles for the use of their power boat Toot. Helping Dick Clark conduct the racing were Joan and Chip Wood.
We have raced five of nine scheduled races. In the next two days, January and February, will have a lot of racing to complete the series. Come on out and use your Merc.

2015 Turkey Day Regatta
The regatta had only one day of racing as there was not much wind on day one and nothing on day two. It was tough sailing but Randy Smith won the regatta. With the win he won the 2015 Travel Trophy Award, the George Rosman trophy.

2015 Cabrillo Beach YC One Design Regatta
On a perfectly warm day with a nice breeze at 7-8 knots veering to the west, 11 Mercs raced four races. The courses were once around windward leeward finishing on the wind for the first two races. The third and fourth races were twice around with a gate for the leeward mark.
Race one got off to a quick start with Mike Burch and Gerry Lampert doing a fine job of holding off Park Densmore and Katie Worden. There did not seem to be a favored side of the course, just make your boat go fast. Randy and Katherine Smith placed third.
Race two was more of the same with Burch sailing very well. This race he had to hold off Chris Rabb and Kenny Dair. Here was Densmore again sailing his boat very fast to place third.
Race three was twice around and here was Burch doing his thing again. This time sailing to the right was the way to go as the wind direction was moving west. Rabb was second again followed by Smith.
Race four Smith took off and he was never headed. Densmore continued with his speed and placed second.Third place went to Eric and Tracy Conn who were doing some outstanding downwind work all day.
The standings at the end of day one were Burch with 9, Densmore with 11 and Rabb with 13.
Day two was a blowout, too much wind. 18 knots and above before the start.
Many thanks to the Cabrillo Beach YC and race chairman Greg Clark for conducting the regatta. The Saturday night turkey dinner was special.

2015 Perry Cup Series Opener
Eight Mercs entered the series on the opening weekend at the Monterey Peninsula YC. The weather was perfect with wind velocity 7-9 knots and very small chop. The three races today were all double sausages finishing downwind.
Race one Dave West with Eric Stasovich won the pin at the start and it was all over. West had good speed and led the fleet up the left side of the course. Jack and Patti McAleer dueled with Pax Davis and David Morris Right from the start. McAllen placed second with Davis third.
Race two West won the pin at the start and also won the race. Doug Baird with Marco Zaninovich found the left shore to his liking and was able to hold on over McAleer to place second with McAllen third.
Race three Baird won the pin and the race. However he was not always in the lead as this race had a little shear in the wind and places changed on both windward legs. There was a definite southwest wind coming off the left shore. Steve Jeppesen with Ken Maring handled the wind shifts very well and picked up second place. McAleer placed third.
Day two and a much different wind and sea conditions. The forecast was rain and and winds at 5-10 knots. The fleet sailed out in almost no wind, but as the delayed start approached so did the weather. The course was a twice around sausage finishing downwind. The breeze built up to 12-15 knots and the chop was a minor Berkeley circle. Baird and West in their battle to start at the pin were both over early. Meanwhile Randy Smith with Lisa Immendorf sailed very well in these conditions holding off McAleer and Davis to win a very close race. McAleer beat Davis in an overlap finish to place second. Davis was third.
Race five started in a dying breeze, but still had some of that nasty chop. One lap was completed as the breeze went away. The race was eventually abandoned. The final tally for the weekend was close. Congratulations to Dave West the winner.
Many thanks again to Dick Clark and his helpers for organizing and running the regatta, Jim and Patti Womble and their yacht “Toot” as the RC boat along with Chip and Joan Wood.

2015 Joe Logan Regatta
The races were delayed for an hour and a half for a lack of wind, but this did not seem to matter. The courses for the day were windward-leeward twice around with downwind finishes.
There was a flood tide with overcast weather that turned into a light rain and then sunshine to end the day. The sea was very flat all day, but the wind started from the south with some west shifts. As the day went on the west prevailed.
Races one the fleet was all trying to take advantage of the shifts and play the tides. Doug Baird and Mac Kilpatrick were sailing the 2015 champion Merc, Arnold. they took off and were never headed. Dave West and Kris Krueger did a fine job holding off Jim and Kathy Bradley who placed third.
Race two Bradley played the outside figuring the tide was not so bad. It payed off big and he lead the entire way. Steady West hung in there and had a very strong second.Steve Jeppesen and Ken Maring sailed their best race and were not challenged for their third place.
Race three the ebb started slowly and the wind was up to 15 in the puffs. Baird got out in front and no one could catch him. There was a very tight race to the downwind finish between Pax Davis with Aaron Lee, West and Randy Smith with John Hayes. Davis was second by a half a boat length. West finished ahead of Smith by the same distance.
Day one results had Baird tied with West.
Day two started with West dropping race three, after a discussion on shore as he fouled the McCormacks in race three, but he did no turns on the course. The fourth race started in the flood tde and a strong westerly breeze with a short chop. Smith got a good start and was first to the weather mark on the double sausage course. However West got by him . West led the rest of the way and the downwind finish was very close with West first. Smith was second with Baird third. The fifth race was not sailed due to the wind velocity.
Congratulations to Baird for winning The Joe Logan Trophy.
Many thanks to th PRO Tony Chargin and the St Francis YC.

66th Mercury Labor Day Regatta
The 66th Mercury Labor Day Regatta at Stillwater Cove was in sunny weather. The breeze was 14 knots with shifty puffs to 16 and a bit of a swell with a small wind chop. Seven mercs enter this year's race. Whelan from San Diego, Baird and Baldwin from Fresno, Kraft from Monterey with Bradley, Davis and Smith from SF Bay. Good fleet representation.
Race one had Doug Baird with Terrasa Davis getting the start and speeding off on the double sausage finishing downwind. It was easy. Jim and Kathy Bradley sailed past Pax Davis and David Morris on the first downwind leg to hold on to place second. Davis was third.
Race two was more of the same! Baird gets the lead and holds on for an easy victory. However the rest of the fleet was very close at the last weather mark of the twice around sausage. Bradley hit the mark, did his turn and proceeded to pass Davis on the downwind leg to the finish. Another second for Bradley and another third for Davis.
Race three had the wind dropping in velocity. There were some shifty puffs at about 8-10. Baird was off fast, but Bradley passed him on the first leg and the was a race on in the two lap course. Bradley was first at the weather mark followed by Baird and Davis. The beat going into the final weather mark was held by Bradley. Davis and Baird followed. All three compressed going to the finish. Somehow Davis won a couple of seconds in front of Bradley and Baird.
At the end of day one Baird has 5 points, Bradley 6 and Davis 7.
Day two started with the same conditions for race four. However more holes in the wind were occurring off the windward shore. There were two winds. One from the Northwest coming out of the harbor and the outside breeze from the west. No matter what was happening along the shore that was the way to go. The same course was sailed in all races. There were light spots on the downwind legs in the zone between the two winds.
Baird was off very fast in race four and was chased by Bradley and Randy Smith with Lisa Immendorf. Baird won followed by Bradley and Smith.
Race five Baird was off again as the those that started outside and tacked to the mark offshore were hurt. The weekend finale was on the second lap. Don Whelan and Kieth Henry were outside, offshore from Baird, going to the weather mark. Whelan held the wind and got by Baird and held him off downwind to win the race. Bradley was way bac, but went hard to the shore on the second leg. He passed Davis and later Smith on the run to place third.
Congratulations to Doug Baird for winning the regatta. More congratulations to Drake and Peter Baldwin for winning the silver fleet. The fleet thanks Dick Clark for organizing the weekend and running the race committee. We also thank his helpers, Charlie Kurtman , Chip and Joan Wood and Judy Clark.

2015 Hart Nunes Regatta
The race was conducted by the San Franciso YC and sailed in Raccoon Straits. It was a flood tide and the velocity of the tide changed in different parts of the straits. The breeze ranged from about 6knts to maybe 20. It was very shifty. All the races were double sausages finishing downwind. Nine Mercs showed up to race.
Race one had part of the fleet led by Randy Smith and Kurt Hemmingsen going to the Angel Island shore. Smith did a fine job with the shifts off the island in the back eddy. Pax Davis and Aaron Lee followed as did Larry Nelson and Tom Rankin. Davis won their duel. The second lap everybody held their position. Smith won, Davis second and Nelson third.
Race two most of the fleet followed Smith and once again he showed how to sail up to the weather mark. He stretched his lead on the second lap and won easily. Davis and Dave West with Eric Stass. had their duel with Davis passing West on the downwind leg to the finish. The tide at the weather mark was in the strongest part of the flood. Rounding this mark made sailors honest. Most competitors hit it twice while going around it ten times during the day.
Race three, the race committee brought the weather mark in a little closer, still in the strong part of the flood. Smith led the fleet off the start to Angel Island. Davis stayed on the Marin shore on a long port tack then tacked to the mark. He had to do two more tacks to get around the mark, but he had a big lead. He held it on the second lap to win. Smith was the leader from the Island shore to place second followed by West in the third place.
Race four had all going up the Marin shore from the start. West did a masterful job of getting the lead and not giving up an inch. He was able to tack and make the weather mark on each leg and win the race. Nelson, who seemed to have good speed all day, placed second. Smith and Davis were back in the fleet, but tacked under the rest of the fleet on the second weather leg and Davis pulled out the third spot.
Race four the fleet figured it out and Jack McAleer and Tom Barnes were right off the line, on to the port tack in the good back eddy. Jim Coggan and Mike Spitz in Jim Barton’s Merc, were in a dog fight with McAleer. It went right down to the closest finish of the day with McAleer winning followed by Coggan in second place and Nelson third.
Smith won the day followed by Davis and West. Many thanks to the SFYC race committee for conducting some great racing.

Final Regatta of the 2015 NORCAL Series
A small fleet of five Mercs raced five single sausage courses, finishing on the wind. The very shifty winds had a velocity of 6-15 knots. The stronger winds came in the later races. The flood tide kept a very smooth sea.
Race one had Pax Davis with Chris Davis working the northerly shifts to hold off Jim and Kathy Bradley. There did not seem to be a favored side of the course, just getting the right shift.
Race two Bill and Katy Worden led at the weather mark. Davis got a nice little puff on the downwind leg to get by Worden and take first place. Worden was second.
Race three the wind was picking up and Worden was rolling going up wind. He was able to hold off Bradley’s challenge and won the race. Bradley was second.
Race four Worden was tacking to port off the starting line once hitting near the shore he took a long starboard tack to the other shore and picked up a little south in the wind and went on to win the race. Once again Bradley chased for second place.
Race five Worden used the same strategy as the previous race and won easily. Davis and Bradley had a good battle with Davis getting second.
Worden won day. Davis won the series. Good attendance can be a big help in any series. The attendance was a little off as there were other regattas occurring on the same date. We will try to do better with the schedule next year.
Many thanks to the Encinal Yacht Club and their small boat Captain Ken Popplewell and his wife Marriane. They set up good courses in trying conditions.

2015 Homecoming Regatta
Third regatta of the 2015 NORCAL Series was sailed for the Homecoming Trophy. Five Mercs raced five single sausage courses finishing on the wind. Because of the shifty winds which might have hit a puff of 8 knots, the windward and leeward marks were not set directly in line. There was plenty of tacking and jibing on the course in the smooth water
Race one had Pax Davis and Aaron Lee trading places with Randy Smith and Mike Spitz all around the course. A nice shift after rounding the leeward mark set Davis up with the win.
Race two had Larry Nelson and Mike Wilson sail a very nice weather leg and they were gone. Nelson won while Davis and Smith duked it out with Davis placing second.
Race three Davis was off very fast and was never headed, but Smith was always there. The wind was giving a little south and some north, but was primarily west.
Race four Doug Baird and Anne McCormack had enough of the rest of the group and they turned up the jets. Baird won but not without Smith giving a good chase.
Race five it was Smith’s turn as he was able to catch Baird on the run and win going away on the final leg.
With the throwout Davis won the Homecoming Trophy. Smith had the low score, but could not win the tiebreaker. Davis still leads the series.
Many thanks to Ken and Maryann Poppelwell running our NORCAL Series

Cinco De Mayo Regatta
The 2015 Cinco de Mayo regatta was met with big seas and windy conditions. The Saturday forecast was for a pleasant 8-10 knots all day. However the 10:30 am skipper’s meeting was greeted with 15 knots and building. Five boats were registered for the regatta and GT and Mickey (583) were out early on the water. They were treated to 6 - 8 foot cross swell (west and south) and a building breeze. Doug Baird with crew Remy Magerum (508) and Rand Smith and daughter (543) joined them as the breeze continued to build as it shifted to the north. With conditions counting to deteriorate all participants decided it was best to abandon for the day. The regatta then continued with cocktails at Mickey’s and GT’s house followed by dinner at Cody’s.
Sunday saw the same 8-10 knot forecast. Again the forecast was off with 14 knots building to 18 by the late afternoon. Good news was the seas calmed to a 1 foot wind chop and we able to get two single sausage races completed. Baird won the first and Smith taking the second race leaving them tied for the regatta.

Carmiggelt Trophy Race
Not many Mercs, but very competitive on a moderate sunny day. There were big shifts and changes in the strength of the wind. The strongest puffs, not many, were about 10 knots. All the courses were single sausages finishing on the wind. The sea was very smooth with very little traffic.
Race one had Pax Davis and Aaron Lee going to the right side of the course to get a little more wind as did Bill Worden and Lowell Harrison. They were close going downwind, but Davis hung on to win followed by Worden.
Race two the more southerly shift came in with Davis tangling with Randy Smith and Lisa Immendorff as they both had nice port tack starts. Smith lead all the way to final beat where Davis overtook him to place first. Smith was second.
Race three Jim and Kathy Bradley took off on the start with a little south in the wind and were never headed to win. Paul Mueller and Mike Bilafer sailed their best race and came in second.
Race four Bradley had a good start and played the shifts very well and led at the weather mark. Very closely followed by Davis and Smith where the three Mercs hit a light spot. Bradley escaped followed by Davis. Bradley won easily.
Race five Worden had the lead at the weather mark. Bradley was second and jibed away to the Oakland shore and went on to win the race. Davis passed Worden on the beat to place second.
Bradley won the day on a tie breaker as Davis took the series lead.
Many thanks to our race committee Ken and Maryann Poppelwell for a job well done.

2015 Norcal Series Opener
On a 70 degree plus, sunny day, with the wind 3-6 knots and smooth water with very little traffic, six Mercs raced five races to open the 20 race NOCAL Series off Encinal YC. The races were all windward-leeward Finishing on the wind.
Race one saw Dave West and Chris Krueger show how fast they are. They ran away from the fleet to place first. Pax Davis with Chris Davis was a solid second followed by Paul Mueller and David Ross having one their best finishes to place third.
Race two, nothing was going to change, West put on his motor again on the twice around course. Davis chased, but not a chance. He had to settle for second. Larry Nelson and Michael Quinn, Who just won the Three Bridge Fiasco, sailed their best Merc race to place third.
Race three was more of the speedster, West, with Davis in pursuit. Davis had to hold off Chris and Robert Lazafame to win by a hair for the second and third place.
Race four Ben Bradley had taken the helm from father Jim and was the only Merc to beat West. Ben did it with quick tack to port on a favorable wind shift at the start. It was all over with West getting second and Lanzo third.
Race five the speedster, West, was back at it and won again and easily won for the day.
Ben was solid second with Davis placing third.
Many thanks to Ken and Marrianne Popplewell for conducting the races. Ken is Encinal YC’s Small Boat Captain for this year. Staff Commodore Mike Andrews help set up the course.

2015 LA Midwinters at the Cabrillo Beach YC
There was a 20% chance of rain, never came. The breeze started about 5 and maybe hit 8 knots. Very smooth sea except for the power boat wake. The course was set up as a windward leeward sausage finishing on the wind.
The first race was a one time around for the 12 contestants. Eric and Tracy Conn went left off the starting line and Randy and Kathryn Smith went right. Most of the fleet went right. Smith was first to the weather mark followed by Conn. They held their positions to the finish.Mike Burch and Tim Noys were close behind in the third spot. Chris and Chris Lanzafame beat Pax Davis and Dave Smith at the finish to round out the top five places.
The second race was one time around and this time Burch got the lead and never gave it up. Chris Messano and Doug Baird chased, but still placed second. Kenny Dair and Gregg Rogers finished third ahead of Conn, who was fourth. Fifth place went to Park Densmore and Pam Webber. They sailed one of their best races.
The third race was twice around with the wind up a knot or two. Messano was in good form leading all the way. Conn also held his position the entire race to come in second.Birch was third. Smith made a good comeback on the second leg to place fourth. Davis placed fifth.
The fourth race was once around and Smith got it going again and nipped Messano to place first. However after day one Messano led Smith by one point. Don Whelan and Robert Lanzafame were one of few sailors that took the port gate to get third place. Dair was fourth with Greg Clark and Val Gee placing fifth. Greg is the CBYC RC Chair that put this regatta together
Day two,the wind for race five had a range 8-10 knots. The course was a single sausage once around. Burch went right from the start and was never headed to get first place. Second place went to Smith who was now leading the regatta.Conn placed third by going long on the starboard jib downwind. Messano was fourth dropping from first in the regatta. Whelan picked up his pace to place fifth.
Race six was twice around and Messano turned up the speed to recapture the regatta lead by winning the race. Burch hung in there getting second. Smith placed third dropping out of the lead. Conn was fourth followed by Tom Priest and Dan Schiff in fifth place. One of his better finishes.
Race seven was once around with Clark having a great race to get first place. Burch was second and that was enough to win the regatta. Lanzafame had a great start to place third. Messano was fourth and placed second in the regatta. Dair was fifth.
Congratulation to the CBYC Commodore Mike Burch for winning the regatta. He was sailing with Kristen on day two. This was the first race of the nine race Travel Trophy Series of which the best seven count.
Many thanks to the Cabrillo Beach YC and their race committee. The dinner Saturday night was very good. This club turns it on for the Mercury class.

Final Results of the 2014-2015 Perry Cup
The last three races of the Perry Cup did not happen. Doug Baird showed up, but no one else did. The forecast was kind of crummy, but as the day ended it was not a bad day.
Congratulations to Baird for winning and also traveling the greatest distance. Pax Davis was second with Dave West third.
Many thanks to Dick Clark and all his helpers for organizing and running the Series.
2014-2015 January Perry Cup
The third weekend of the Perry Cup was sailed in 4-6 knots of breeze on a pretty smooth sea. There were mostly small shifts in the north-westerly winds, but in each race there was a twenty plus that would alter the places on the course. All three races were double sausages finishing downwind.
Race one, Doug Baird with Kate Conway got the start, heade to the dark water and were never headed. Pax Davis with Dave Morris were able to overcome Hal and Anne McCormack’s speed upwind by going a little faster downwind to place second. McCormack was third.
Race two, once again Baird won the start, but he had McCormack to contend with. McCormack was first to the first leeward mark, but Baird got him on the beat to win the race. McCormack was second. Jack and Patti McAleer had a nice comeback to place third. This was there first PC race as they ran the first two PC weekends in place of Dick Clark.
Race three, Baird won the start at the pin,and was leading at the first leeward mark. Then he sailed on the starboard tack to a big shift that took him right to the weather mark and he was never headed and won the race. This also gave him the lead for the series. Dave West with Eric Stassevich got the big shift on the second leg to go over Davis. The two had avery close finish with West second and Davis third.
Dick Clark was back running the races on TOOT. Jim and Patti Womble, Chip and Joan Wood, Judy Clark and Donna Womble handled all the race committee chores.
Thank you all!

Perry Cup Update
We found a hole in the weather between the much need rain storms. Warm sun with a max 5 knot breeze that was not always there. Seven Mercs raced the three scheduled races on a pretty smooth sea.
Race one was a double sausage finishing downwind. The breeze was from the north with some shifts, but in the light air too much taking would be a nono. On the second lap Dave West and Chris Krueger came from far back to pick up a little lift on the port tack and went on to win the race. Jim Bradley and Ben Gerber also had a nice recovery to place second.
