Mercury Class Yacht Racing Association

Considering a weather forecast of rain, hail, lighting with 11 kn wind with puffs to 18 and cold, eight Mercs showed up ready to race. The breeze in the puffs might have hit 11, but most of the day was shifty, light and smooth water. The wind was more from the south. The course after several adjustments was a twice around sausage finishing downwind. That was the course for the five races.

The first race Doug Baird with Hal McCormack tacked from the start to gain a long starboard tack to the weather mark. On the next leg of the course, the wind change to a beat. The third leg was a beat and reach. The final leg was a tight reach. Baird won and was closely followed by John Ravizza with Joey Morrison. Jim and Kathy Bradley were third.

Race two, with a course alteration, Ravizza sailed very well and won the race. Bradley was second followed by Pax Davis with Aaron Lee. The trick to this race was to stay in the breeze.

Race three Davis chose more of the middle of the course and was able to hold on. The skipper that got the lead in each race was able to hold it and win. Baird was second, followed by Dave West with Chris Krueger.

Race four, another course adjustment, Baird tacked more to the west than the fleet and won the race easily. Bradley was second and Davis third.

Race five Baird was off very fast again. The second leg up, another course adjustment, no problem for Baird as he won the race and the lead in the series. However on the second windward leg, Bradley passed Davis for second place. Davis was third.

Many Thanks to the EYC and Rear Commodore Theo Rohr, who did a great job conducting the races and making all the course adjustments.
