Mercury Class Yacht Racing Association

Cold temperatures, grey skies, light but with stronger gusts, and plenty of flood tide made up the course Saturday for the 2021 Joe Logan Regatta.
The incoming tide and wind pressure coming off the shore naturally favored the shore and challenging starts directly in front of the Hosting Club, the St. Francis Y.C.

The regatta chairman Tony Chargin, a long time Mercury sailor, was able to put together a well executed and welcoming regatta, despite being one week after the St Francis Big Boat Series. The PRO, Greg Meagherr, was very adept at keeping the fleet informed and the starts rolling before the wind kicked up as it has been known to do on the City Front.
John Buestad, a St. Francis Knarr sailor, took full advantage of a well prepared boat and crew (Chris Boome) to sail and win Joe Logan Regattta in his first Mercury event. The trick was to either be on port at the start and cross the fleet, or starboard and tack over soon. Tide, rocks, light wind and lots of short tacking made the sailing hectic. The rest was a calculation of wind puffs vs tide... we can leave that up to endless hours of discussion....
Some of us got to get a free "burnishing" on the beaches by bumping the sand banks .. and a clear message... heel the boat and tack...

Thanks go out again to the St. Francis Y.C. in running this annual event.
