Mercury Championship, Huntington Lake Regatta, July 26-28 (21 boats)
Huntington Lake once again proved to be an ideal place for the 2024 Championship Regatta. Following two weeks of stormy High Sierra weather, the skies cleared and the wind came down the lake in its normal manner for an excellent 5 race series. The first two races on Friday were run-away wins by Cabrillo Beach sailor Mike Burch with daughter Kristin crewing. They led at every turning mark, and after Mike’s win in the 2023 Championships in SF Bay, the class was on notice that Mike and Kristin were a force to be dealt with. However, Chris Raab and Kenny Dair were not far back with a second and third for the day. The racing was followed by a Mai Tai beach party on Lakeshore Beach organized by Tom Priest.

Three intrepid Mercurys braved the weather last Saturday and enjoyed the mostly dry and very quick racing. With the puffy (10-16) and Southerly wind direction, the RC endeavored to set as long of a square leg as possible, but it was challenging. The first race was once around, with the first beat taking just 3 minutes and the entire race for the winning 8:30 minutes. The team was John Hansen and Tony Basso on #562.

The following two races were twice around, yielding a race time of approximately 17 minutes, and were both won by Randy Smith and Noah on #543. On #529, EYC Commodore Chris Davis and Staff Commodore Kevin Clark got faster as the day continued. This was Kevin's first day on a Mercury, and well done!

With a squall cell visible, the fleet requested once around for race #4. This was another quick one, and #543 was again victorious.

It should be noted (at his request) that John Hansen did not whine and ask for a shorter course for race #4.

The next Mercury Norcal date is April 6, and we will be racing for the beautiful Carmiggelt Trophy! Last year's winners, Jim and Kathy Bradley #553, were kind enough to drop the trophy at EYC before the racing. Unfortunately, they cannot compete this year, but we hope to have them back racing again soon.

Ten Mercury’s were entered for the 94^th Midwinters Regatta at Cabrillo Beach YC.

With four of the entries traveling south from the SF Fleet. In the usual form the fleet was competitive, mixing it up with crowded mark roundings, and close finishes.

Saturday’s conditions saw the wind ranging from 220-240 degrees as the day progressed, and wind speed up to 12 + mph. Ben Bradley won race 1 from start to finish. Race 2 and 4 were won by Mike Burch, and race 3 by David Bacci. Mike Burch was leading after day 1 with consistently strong finishes.
